Aashni Shah is a Software Engineer by day and a CEO by night. As part of her day job, Aashni works on delivering an innovative experience for Cash at Square, focusing on scalability and future expansion into new markets. Additionally, Aashni has found a way to mix her two largest passions; technology and philanthropy by working as the CEO for Elixir Labs. Elixir Labs is a non-profit startup that partners with other non-profits to build technical solutions for social good, and currently has five active projects around the world.
Despite these two roles, Aashni still finds time to participate in other projects such as helping teach children how to code, creating technical tutorials that she shares via her blog, and helping University students with their Resumes and Job Interview prep. As an advocate for diversity in tech, Aashni has spoken at conferences and events about Women Empowerment, Women in Leadership and the importance of diversity.
Previously, Aashni graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. During her time at University, Aashni was the first female president of the Computer Science Student Union in over 10 years. She was also an active member in the Undergrad Women in CS group. Aashni founded UofTHacks, the first collegiate hackathon in Canada and from her experiences organizing and participating in these hackathons, Aashni has helped other groups start and grow their hackathons in their own communities.
Aashni was born and raised in Kenya and moved to Canada in 2011 when she started University. She is a woman of colour, but doesn’t let colour or her gender define her. Aashni firmly believes that with the right type of technical aid, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society that celebrates our differences.
